"He's a good role model-now that I'm a teenager, I see how much role models affect us. We went to some of his games," Lynn Gordon said. Gordon's daughter Lynn, 17, who attends Carbondale Community High School, said she came to support her mom and to meet the family of one of her role models. "Since Michael has stayed here in Illinois, it's nice to come up and be able to see somebody like this firsthand." "We don't get these opportunities a lot in Carbondale," she said. "I feel like this family has really given us a lot and sacrificed a great deal to let us enjoy their son and their brother. I'm pretty devoted, I guess, to make a trip like this, but I see it as kind of a payback," Gordon said. "My daughter and her friend and I are all playing hooky. Gordon, who teaches at Southern Illinois University, said she felt it necessary to give the Jordans something back after all their years of sacrifice. It's kind of an inspiration for my kids and a way to connect with him."ĭiann Gordon, of Carbondale, traveled five hours through a snowstorm with her daughter and a friend to see the Jordans. Michael Jordan wasn't always the best and look at him now. "It's a concept I use now with my own kids when things don't go their way. "I've heard a lot of her theories on parenting and the strength of prayer, and I always tell my kids when Michael was young he wasn't always the best," Berk said.
